World Cup 2026: US-Mexico-Canada bid chosen as host

9 days ago   |   By Yahoo Sports

At a FIFA association member vote in Moscow Wednesday, the joint North American bid won the right to host the 2026 World Cup, comfortably beating rivals Morocco in the vote. It will be the first time the World Cup will be shared by three host nations, but since the unified bid was announced in April 2017 political relationships between the US and its proposed co-hosts have been touchy at times. US President Donald Trump called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "meek and mild" in a tweet over a tariff dispute following a G7 meeting earlier in June, while tariffs imposed on Mexico along...

2026 World Cup vote: Does the United Bid or Morocco hold the advantage?

9 days ago   |   By Yahoo Sports

When the United States men's team missed out on this World Cup it was lamentable, embarrassing and a huge lost opportunity. Wednesday's vote to determine whether a U.S.-led United Bid that also comprises Mexico and Canada will be granted the honor of hosting the World Cup in 2026 can be seen in much the same way. If a majority of FIFA member nations support the bid, it would be a major lift for the game in the U.S., and go a significant way toward off-setting the dampening effect of that qualification failure. The United Bid is rock-solid, with a forceful, persuasive arsenal that...

Ovechkin, several other Capitals would accept White House invitation

9 days ago   |   By TheScore

U.S. President Donald Trump has yet to officially invite the 2018 Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals to the White House for a traditional visit, but it appears most players would accept the offer when it comes, according to Samantha Pell of The Washington Post. This comes roughly a week after Trump said he wouldn't invite the eventual NBA champion Golden State Warriors to the White House, and he canceled the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles ' invite after Nick Foles was reportedly the only player confirmed to go. While some players declined to comment, Alex Ovechkin , T.J...

U.S. to host 2026 World Cup, with neighbors

9 days ago   |   By Yahoo Sports

North America will host the 2026 World Cup after FIFA voters overwhelmingly opted for the financial and logistical certainty of a United States-led bid over a risky Moroccan proposal for the first 48-team tournament. The soccer showpiece will return to the U.S. for the first time since 1994 after gaining 134 votes, while Morocco got 65 at the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday. The vote by football federations was public, in contrast to secrecy surrounding the ballot by FIFA's elected board members for the 2018 and 2022 hosts, Russia and Qatar, in 2010. The U.S. proposed staging 60 out...

Canada will ride enormous wave of soccer support into 2026 World Cup

9 days ago   |   By Sportsnet

The 1994 World Cup in the United States had a dreamy quality to it, strangers visiting a strange land to watch a game that transfixed every part of the planet except for the place where its greatest spectacle was being staged.
Many of the supporters who arrived from around the globe were wide-eyed, experiencing a country they knew only from movies and television, forced to fly from match to match because of the country's vastness, soaking it all in.
Meanwhile, the natives looked upon this odd travelling circus with an arched eyebrow, as foreign, as exotica.
