The Astros' apologies did little to repair their image

13 days ago   |   By Yardbarker

Shortly after Astros owner Jim Crane, new manager Dusty Baker and players Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve addressed the media in a press conference regarding their sign-stealing scandal on Thursday, the clubhouse was opened up for the entire roster to offer comments on the ordeal. Their comments created quite the contrast with those still emerging from others around the league. George Springer, Josh Reddick, Bregman, Altuve and Yuli Gurriel were among the many Astros players to express varying levels of contrition. Most spoke in general terms, though, and the key phrases throughout left many...

Brian Cashman says Carlos Beltran did not bring sign-stealing to Yankees

13 days ago   |   By Yardbarker

Carlos Beltran has been painted as one of the masterminds behind the elaborate cheating scheme that was in place with the Houston Astros during the 2017 season, and many have wondered if he taught some of his methods to the New York Yankees last year. According to Brian Cashman, the Yankees had no involvement in anything like that. Cashman had high praise for Beltran when speaking with reporters on Friday, calling the former Yankees special adviser a “good person” and a “gentle giant,” via SNY's Coby Green. When asked about the rumblings that Beltran must have shared his sign-stealing...

Former Astro Tony Kemp says he refused to join Houston's sign stealing

13 days ago   |   By Yardbarker

One member of the 2017 Astros claims to have refused to take part in Houston's sign-stealing system. Tony Kemp, who was briefly an outfielder on the 2017 team, said Friday he refused the opportunity to take part in the scheme when it was offered to him upon being called up in September. “That stood,” Kemp said, via Janie McAuley of the Associated Press. “Once I got there in September, the system was already in place, and I just tried to keep my head down and play hard and not really concern myself with it.” Kemp, now with the Oakland Athletics, said he never felt any further pressure to...

Dodgers' Ross Stripling was prepared to throw at Astros players over sign stealing

13 days ago   |   By Yardbarker

One interesting storyline for 2020 will be how many pitchers take justice into their own hands by throwing at Houston Astros players over their systemic sign-stealing. That question is one that Ross Stripling grappled with. Stripling was supposed to be involved in a trade to the Los Angeles Angels, where he was highly likely to face the division-rival Astros at some point during the season. The trade ultimately fell through but not before Stripling had time to wrestle with the question of whether he'd do so. He ultimately determined that he would if the circumstances made sense. If...

13 days ago   |   By Sportsnet

MESA, Ariz. - Called up in September 2017 by Houston, Tony Kemp immediately got asked by teammates whether he wanted to be a part of the Astros' sign-stealing scheme. His answer was a firm no, and Kemp didn't feel further pressure to do it.
“That stood,” the second baseman said Friday after arriving in Oakland's spring training camp and reuniting with former Astros teammate Mike Fiers, who went public in November about Houston's sign-stealing that rocked the baseball off-season.
“Once I got there in September the system was already in place and I just tried to keep my head down and play...
