Mookie Betts, Red Sox avoid arbitration with $20 million deal

Thanks to the deadline we mentioned earlier, a lot of players are signing arbitration-avoiding deals with their clubs today. None will be bigger than this one, however: Mookie Betts and the Red Sox have agreed to a one-year deal for $20 million. Betts, who is just in his second year of arbitration-eligibility, made $10.5 million last season, so he'll nearly double his salary.

The Red Sox and American League MVP Mookie Betts have settled on a one-year deal worth $20M, tweets Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet. The salary figure is a record for a player in his second year of arbitration eligibility. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Betts could earn an additional $400K via awards. Betts, who will remain under team control through 2021, had been projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $18.7M.
